NEW MEMBER CHECKLIST
Congratulations on being accepted into Torchbearers! Coming into a new space is always intimidating, so we created this checklist to give you a clear view of what to expect for the end of this year and the beginning of next year. Hopefully this will make the transition into being a Torchbearer much easier. You’ll be introduced to our communication tool (Slack), our committee structure, and other important aspects of being a Torchbearer.
GETTING STARTED
Complete these tasks by December 11
Sign Up for Slack
What is Slack? Slack is the primary tool we use for communication. You will still receive emails for important Torchbearers information, such as your leadership and development pre-work, but Slack is where 90% of our conversations happen. It’s important to get to know this tool. We recommend installing the application on your phone for the best experience, especially while you build the habit of checking it. You’ll learn more about Slack during our Membership Retreat in January, but in the meantime we would love to meet you on Slack!
Create your Torchbearers Slack account. Please include a photo of yourself and sign up with the primary email you submitted on your acceptance form.
Introduce yourself in #general. Be creative – we want to get to know who you are! You can tell us where you work, what you do for fun, what you love about Akron, who your pets are, or anything else you feel comfortable sharing.
Join Slack Channels
You’ll automatically be added to a few channels, but we have dozens available. We talk about a wide range of things, and channels are our way of silo’ing specific conversations to keep our #general from being overburdened. Browse our channels and join the ones that interest you.
Learn more about our main channels:
Using #general
#general is one of two channels that will always include everyone. It’s used for Torchbearers-specific communication and questions that are meant to spark a conversation or elicit feedback. Remember to respond in the thread to keep the conversation contained.
Using #announcements
#announcements is one of two channels that will always include everyone. It’s used to announce important events, news, opportunities, and information. These are things that typically don’t warrant discussion, but if you have a question, feel free to respond in the thread so that other announcements don’t get buried.
Using #it-help
#it-help is used to submit any issues that you encounter with TB technology (i.e., the website, virtual meetings, TB Weekly, email lists). This channel is monitored by the board.
Class Channels
Each year (since we started using Slack), we add a channel for that class. This is a place to have conversations specifically with your class members. Discuss anything you’d like here, but remember, it probably won’t be seen by many folks outside of your class!
Committee Channels
We have a channel for each committee. Once you’ve selected your committee, be sure to join the applicable channel to easily communicate with the other members of the committee.
General Interest Channels
We also have lots of channels for shared interests or discussion topics. Some examples include:
#social-tb-taste-buds (this group meets monthly to try local restaurants)
#social-tb-book-club (this group meets monthly on Zoom to discuss that month’s selected book)
#social-grab-a-donut (this is a fun robot that pairs two random people up every three weeks for an informal get together)
#social-lets-hang-out (this is a place to just find a friend to hang out with, very informal)
Have a topic you’d like to discuss? Feel free to create your own channel.
Note for the Class of 2025: We are working on renaming a few of the channels listed above prior to the 2025 Membership Retreat. A notification will be sent to #announcements prior to this change and this page will be updated to reflect the update.
Attend the New Member Mixer
Please join us for the New Member Mixer on Thursday, December 12th from 5:30 to 7:30 pm at The Knight Stage at the Akron Civic Theatre. This event is nothing formal but simply an opportunity to meet your fellow classmates and officially welcome you to the organization! The 2025 Board and Committee Chairs will also be in attendance.
Purpose
To meet your class, our committee and our board of directors.
Dress Code
The dress code is dressy casual. Want to wear a suit or dress? Go for it. More comfortable in jeans? That’s fine, too. Probably leave the sweats at home though.
What To Bring
No need to bring anything with you.
What To Expect
Expect to meet a few new and returning members and get an introduction into how our committees operate.
Create your website account
Around the time of the New Member Mixer, be on the lookout for an email with a subject Your account at Torchbearers Akron is now active. The email will go to the address you specified in the acceptance form. Once you are logged in, you will appear in our membership directory and you can start RSVP’ing to events!
SETTLING IN
Complete these tasks by February 1
Attend January Committee Meetings
We recommend that you attend as many committee meetings as you can in January, so that you can get a feel for what they do and determine which committee you’d like to join. Check the list of upcoming committee meetings and RSVP for the ones you’re interested in attending (committee meetings for next year will be posted by the end of November).
Attend the Membership Retreat
Our January Membership Retreat is an important event for our organization. We have team building exercises, new member orientation, and lots of opportunities to get to know one another. You’ll need to RSVP for both the Friday, Jan 17th evening and Saturday, Jan 18th half-day sessions.
Purpose
To get to know the organization better, bond as a group, and learn how we can shape Akron this year.
Dress Code
Friday: The dress code is business casual, as we offer free headshots during this time.
Saturday: The dress code is casual.
What To Bring
Friday: No need to bring anything with you.
Saturday: Bring a notebook and something to write with or a tablet/computer.
What To Expect
Friday: Expect to hear from a community leader and network with other members.

Select a Committee
Committees keep our organization moving forward. Every active member is required to join and participate in a committee. We ask that you please select a committee by February 1 so you can sign up for the tasks that your committee needs. Once you choose a committee, be sure to join the applicable Slack channel.
2025 Class Committee Selection
2025 Community Impact Committee Members
2025 Events Committee Members
2025 Leadership & Development Committee Members
2025 Marketing & Communication Committee Members
2025 Membership Committee Members
Consider Joining a Subcommittee
Subcommittees are special interest groups within Torchbearers. We currently have three subcommittees, Sustainability and Mental Health & Addiction, and Capstone. Subcommittees offer events and learning opportunities for the entire organization. You are not required to join a subcommittee, but can do so in addition to joining a committee (if you have the capacity) by joining the Slack channel associated with that subcommittee.
ESTABLISHING ROUTINES
Complete these tasks by March 1
Attend Your First L&D Session
Your first-year Leadership and Development (L&D) experience is one of the cornerstones of being a Torchbearer. You’ll learn about yourself, your communication, making change, and many other thoughtful topics we’ve developed into our curriculum. Check out the list of L&D sessions and make sure to RSVP for your first one in February (first year member sessions will be added to the calendar by the end of December).
Sign Up for a Service Event
Community service is another cornerstone of being a Torchbearer (and a great way to earn points). We practice and produce servant leaders that know the value of giving back. You’ll be making real, tangible change in our city to help shape Akron. Check out our list of service events and make sure to RSVP to any of them that fit your schedule. Service events are added on a regular basis as they are approved, so make sure to check back often!
Attend Our TB Anniversary Event
Social events are also a key part of the Torchbearers experience and we have both internal and public events. Our largest and most important event of the year is our anniversary event as it serves as a way to network and share our latest accomplishments with our community. Check out our list of social events and make sure to get your ticket for Anniversary once they go on sale!
Review Our Resources Page
Torchbearers is a lot sometimes. That’s part of the fun! Don’t worry, we don’t expect you to keep it all in your head. That’s why we have the resources section of our site. You have to be logged in to see it. It contains our by-laws, policies, and board meeting minutes (we post them monthly). It has our brand guidelines and various branded templates. It also has links to useful and frequent tasks you might need to revisit like paying your dues, buying TB merch, or even a link to this checklist so you can come back periodically and make sure you’re on track! Make sure to take a look so you know what’s there for when you need it.
