Our membership retreat is an important part of our year as we’ll be learning more about each other, the organization, the community, and how we can work together to shape Akron in 2023. You’ll need to RSVP for both the Friday Jan 13th evening and Saturday Jan 14th half-day sessions. This is not an overnight retreat.
Torchbearers is putting a focus on North Hill this year, a neighborhood selected by our 2022 class as the focus for our 2023 capstone project. This is Akron’s international district and hosts a broad range of cultures. As such, we wanted to make sure our kick-off evening represented the beginning of that relationship. We will be at Royal Palace, a Nepali-owned venue, eating a Nepali menu prepared by a local vendor, and hearing entertainment from local Nepali entertainment. For our 2023 class, you’ll notice this is in line with our new member mixer, which was at Karen Ally’s Thai Restaurant.
Throughout this year, we want to not only hear and see, but strive to understand these cultures in good faith as we learn how to connect with this neighborhood. Torchbearers is not an organization that is interested in “saving” parts of our city through one-off service events. Instead, we aim to connect and serve through working with already established community leaders that we’ll hear from throughout the year.
To get to know the organization better, bond as a group, and learn how we can shape Akron this year.
The dress code is business casual, as we offer free headshots during this time.
No need to bring anything with you.
Expect to hear from the TB president, community leader(s), and network with other members. Our full membership will be in attendance. You’ll also have the opportunity to have a new headshot taken by photographer Tim Fitzwater. For food, we will have a Nepali menu with vegan and vegetarian options available.
Torchbearers is committed to long-term support of hybrid events from the perspective of inclusivity. Some folks simply can’t make some events in person and that’s ok. We expect you to use our virtual option only when necessary and to be engaged when doing so. We just ask that you do not regularly attend virtually or attend while multi-tasking as you won’t get the full benefit of being a Torchbearer this way; we would suggest not attending if you aren’t able to be engaged in the event. Life happens, you can miss an event here and there – that’s okay.
