On a quarterly basis, Torchbearers volunteers at St. Bernard’s Hot Meal Program. Over the course of about two hours, our members help to prepare, cook and serve over 100 meals to neighbors who are in need of a healthy meal.
While this is an ongoing service project for our group, we only help out in the kitchen for a handful of the 70-plus hot meals that St. Bernard’s serves. There is a core group of volunteers who are there for every meal, some of whom have been helping for over 30 years. It is during these types of service projects that Torchbearers are able to roll up their sleeves and work alongside those who have blazed the trail ahead of us.
This program isn’t just about serving food. Volunteers are encouraged to connect with those who come in for a meal. From complaints about the Cleveland Browns to excitement about paperwork for a new apartment, there is no shortage of topics. While some conversations are lighthearted, some reflect the stark realities and challenges that members of our community face each day. This service event in particular allows our members to move beyond stereotypes and learn an individual’s story.
Community service is a core value of the Torchbearers’ experience, but so is growth. We believe that to grow as leaders, we need to step outside of the office and serve where we are needed.
