A Peek into the Park East Project

There’s one project that is on the minds of all Torchbearers for 2019, and that’s Park East. The project is the culmination of the organization’s spirit towards activating change in the greater Akron area. Throughout the life of the project, Torchbearers members will be working with residents of the Park East neighborhood to conceptualize, build, and celebrate a fitness trail that can be used by anyone who uses the area. In addition to the fitness trail, on March 20 from 9 am – 12 pm, they will be working with Bright Signs to refresh the signs in the area and with Keep Akron Beautiful to clean up the area, in recognition of Clean Up Akron Month.

Led by Kim Cook, Board Member and Andre Campbell and Rachel Logan, Co-Chairs of the Community Impact Committee, the group has found a way to meld the ideas of its members towards the design of the trail, along with the true desires of the residents in the community. Developing and maintaining trust is the underlying theme of the project. Years ago when the park was initially created, many community members did not feel included in the decision making process. This time around, under the direction of Akron Civic Commons, The Knight Foundation, The JPB Foundation, The Kresge Foundation, The Rockefeller Foundation, and the GAR Foundation, the overall scope of the project is to focus on making the once neglected space an area that will be a vibrant gathering spot for the diverse mix of people who are a part of the area. Every idea that is generated towards the development of the park is first vetted by the residents of Park East. Stay tuned for a celebration event to highlight all of the work that is being done in Park East.
